On October 10, Rasmussen Reports released a Vermont gubernatorial poll, showing Republican Jim Douglas at 45%, independent Anthony Pollina 25%, Democrat Gaye Symington 20%, other and undecided 10%. However, the poll also seemed to suggest that if voters get the idea that if Symington has a better chance to win than Pollina, that Pollina’s support would drop to 4%; whereas if voters feel that Pollina has a better chance than Symington, that 19% would still stick with Symington. See here. In Vermont, if no one gets 50% for Governor, the legislature chooses the next governor. Vermont has a Democratic majority in both houses of the legislature currently, and that is not expected to change.
The Democrat should drop out and stop taking votes from the progressive.
Oh come on citizen1, that would require too much commond sense. Besides, did you not read the various blogs in Politics1, 3rdParty [aka Lib/ Conservative/ BobBarr08 watch], and here?
Symington could well come it THIRD and STILL be the next governor! 21st Century American Democracy, not much more than Hitler or Stalin offered……….
As I told Tony over the phone early in the year, play it safe with Lt. Governor, get elected, and hope for health or political problems with the troubled incumbent or the next election.
[How strange, Symington and the Dems would not commit to the Governor’s race when Douglas was in it for a walk. Only when the Bull Moose Progressives were in the fight, did the state Democratic Party under cut them. Appointment by the legislature is the only RATIONAL reason in a year with lots of emotion and little logic!]
Hitler? Stalin? They murdered millions. You’re comparing that to making someone who came in third an election (with a good percentage of the vote, nonetheless) governor. Wow.
Pollina should have taken the Democrats’ offer and run for Lt. Governor with no Dem opposition.
I’m with Rationality and Science Education about Symington and the Dems not coming into the race until after Pollina did. They obviously didn’t have anyone to run that they thought could beat Douglas. If they did that person would have appeared a LOT sooner than Sym. did. So in that case, they should have put their support behind Pollina and Sym. should have run for Lt. Gov. It will be a great day when the Dems and Progs. can really get together and beat the likes of Douglas. In this case, the Dems. definitely should have thrown their support behind Pollina. If they had we’d have Pollina for a gov. instead of Douglas again. I hope I’m wrong and we get Pollina- we’ll all find out tomorrow.
