Oklahoma Ballot Access Bill Introduced in House

Oklahoma Representative Charles Key (R-Oklahoma City) has introduced HB 1072, which lowers the number of signatures to qualify a new party from 5% of the last vote cast, to exactly 5,000 signatures. Earlier, Oklahoma Senator Randy Brogdon had introduced a similar (though more comprehensive) bill in the State Senate, SB 359.

Representative Key has also introduced HB 1340, to require parties to pay for their own presidential primaries. The bill would have no effect on primaries for office other than president.

  1. Can we do anything to help? Is there a campaign for better ballot access in Oklahoma that we can donate to or anything?

I’m not an Oklahoman, so I cannot contact my representative to lobby for the passage of this, but is there anythign else that I can do to help?

  2. The two most active people working for better ballot access in the Oklahoma legislature, I believe, are Thom Holmes of the Constitution Party, whose e-mail is holmesta@hotmail.com, and Richard Prawdzienski of the Libertarian Party, whose e-mail is prawdz@aol.com. They might have ideas on how an out-of-stater could help. If I omitted other relevant Oklahomans here, please don’t be offended, and please chime in.

  3. I am saddened to report that OkiesObar in Oklahoma appears to have gone dormant. I, too, recommend Richard Prawdienski as the best contact in Oklahoma on ballot issues at this time.

Other may have their reasons, but I am trying to write a novel and so my outside activism is limited for the time being.
