On May 19, California held a special election to fill the vacant State Senate seat in the 26th district. The results: Democratic Assemblyman Curren Price 70.44%; Republican Nachum Shifren 21.12%; Peace & Freedom member Cindy Varela Henderson 8.43%.
Henderson’s showing is the best Peace & Freedom Party showing in a California legislative race (excluding races with only a single major party candidate) since 1978, when PFP polled 9.90% in a Santa Cruz Assembly race.
Henderson is a telephone technician. See her campaign website here. The 26th district includes part of Hollywood, as well as Baldwin Hills, Silver Lake, Culver City, and other parts of Los Angeles County.
For a third party candidate, she did well.
Way to go, Cindy! God bless you.
Since regaining ballot status in 2003 the Peace and Freedom Party percentage of the vote has been creeping up. In 2008, two candidates, Marsha Feinland and Karen Martinez each received 7.6% of the vote.
In addition, C.T., if the Democrats in this state keep giving in to the Republicans, we are going to keep getting stronger and stronger.
One of the main problems with the budget package that we had to vote on this past Tuesday was that the Democrats mainly brought it about by not standing up for the proletariat. It is as if they said to the Republicans: “We are going to give you what you want and you do not have to take any responsibiliy for it.”
