Terra. com has this op-ed advocating statehood for Puerto Rico. Terra.com is a major internet provider in Latin America, and in Spain, and has a large readership in the U.S. as well. The op-ed says a recent poll in Puerto Rico shows that 57% now favor statehood.
The USA was introducted to Puerto Rico under unusual and unnatural circumstances. State hood would suffer the same fate.
State hood would be awkward from the start. Nation hood [with or with out the U S Treasury ‘monopoly money’ /Federal Certificates] would be much more sane and reasonable. State hood is a transitory stage; a mere bus stop on the eventual trip to independence.
Commonwealth and state hood are partial and unsatisfactory stages to nation hood. Don’t even bother! If the citizens of that island want adult status then they should not short change them selves!

Why would Puerto Rico even want to be a state in this country that is rapidly deteriorating?
As bad as the W. Bush administration was, the Obama administration looks to be driving the country even further into bankruptcy, and looks to be making further inroads into freedom.
Heck, I wish my state would quit being a component of these United States.
Please help me understand this issue more. The article makes it seem like the US is oppressing Puerto Rico. If Puerto Ricans want to become a state all they have to do is agree to do so, draft a constitution, and submit it to congress. They haven’t even passed step number one of agreeing to want to be a state. What am I missing?
