Detroit Voters Defeat Monica Conyers

Detroit held its municipal election on August 4. Nine city councilors were to be elected at-large in a non-partisan election. The top 18 candidates go into a run-off. Monica Conyers, who had pleaded guilty to a felony earlier this year, had remained on the ballot, but she did not place among the 18 top candidates. If she had been elected, she could not have served in office and the city would have needed to hold a special election. Thanks to Thomas Jones for this news.

  1. “she did not place among the 18 top candidates” is a bit mild Conyers finished 62nd out of 168 candidates.

Another incumbent (Martha Reeves and the Vandallas)finished 25th.

Just wait, the pure insanity of having 168 candidates in one election will be gone when Detroit goes to districts. Just watch them ask for the current requirement out of candidates running in districts.

  2. I hope the voters toss out her faux progressive husband John next year as well.

  3. 2 of the other current incumbents did not run — causing the large ballot.

Result – At least 4 of 9 will be new in the next term.
