Dell Incorporated, maker of computers, has offered to buy Perot Systems Corporation for $30 per share. Ross Perot and his family are selling the company that he founded after his first company was bought by General Motors in 1988. See this story. According to other stories, it is estimated that Ross Perot Sr. was already worth $5 billion, and his son Ross Jr. was already worth $2 billion, and the sale will add $1 billion to Perot family wealth.
Gee, I wonder if the Perot’s will have to take the government option for healthcare! 🙂
In buying Perot’s company Dell is buying numerous government contracts for computer work. Those of us who saw Dell as a capitalist success story have to be dismayed that they see the next profit frontier being in government contracts.
I “supported” Ross Perot’s runs for the Presidency in 1992 and 1996 – even though I did not vote for him either time. I have long ago come to the conclusion that only billionaires can run for major offices as 3rd party or independent and have any chance of winning. Had Perot listened to his advisors, picked a better running mate (in 1992)and not dropped out of the race in 1992 before re-entering (losing much respect and credibility) he might could have pulled the upset of political history.
I wish Perot had went back to Texas to run for Governor or US Senator (races he most likely could have won)and set an example for other billionaires.
I’m not a fan of the extreme wealthy, but if they are the only ones who can destroy the “two party monopoly” then I’d be willing to hold my nose and vote for many of them.

Phil Sawyer responds:
Even though government is not to be trusted without reservation, business should be trusted much, much less.

Well, “Alabama Independent,” if you had joined us (Ross Perot voters) in actually voting for the man, at least he would have had one more vote each time!
I read an interview with Perot before the last election. He thought Obama was a Muslim because of an e-mail he got, then the interviewer told him that was a lie and he was like “Oh, okay.” Ross Perot is not a mental giant.
The Honorable Ross Perot is a very intellingent and great man. (He does not utilize Valley Girl Speech, though – that may be where he lost you.)
