On February 7, the man who won the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, Scott Cohen, dropped out of the race. See this story. Thanks to Clay Shentrup for the news.
Probably the Illinois Democratic Party will need to circulate a petition for whomever it chooses to fill the vacancy, under a law the legislature passed last year. UPDATE: in this situation, no petition is needed.
Petitioning does not apply in the event of a vacancy created _after_ a primary. It only applies when the vacancy was caused by having no candidate win the primary election.
WGN was reporting that the State Central Committee (2 members from each of the 19 Congressional districts) would pick the replacement. . . .
Thanks, both #1 and #2. I’ll correct the blog post.
Well sir Richard, the speed was there, it has been on Yahoo News for only eight minutes and just now on IPR

I often wonder, in situations like this, if the guy was facing threats of violence or financial ruin against him or his family. He must have known this stuff would come out.
