The California Peace & Freedom Party will probably have three candidates on its primary ballot for Governor: Stewart Alexander of Riverside County, Carlos Alvarez of Los Angeles County, and Mohammad Arif of Kern County.
The other statewide nominees are likely to be: Lieutenant Governor, C. T. Weber; Secretary of State Mary Lou Cabral; Treasurer Debra Reiger; Controller Karen Martinez; Attorney General Bob Evans; Insurance Commissioner Dina Padilla; U.S. Senate Marsha Feinland.
Candidates in California partisan primaries may have a message included in the Voters Pamphlet if they pay for it, but the cost is high: $25 per word. C. T. Weber spent $450 to have a short message in the Pamphlet asking voters to vote against Proposition 14, the top-two election measure.
I’m not a supporter of the Peace and Freedom Party and probably wouldn’t find much in its platform I could agree with. Still, I have to give my “hats off” to them. They understand qthe way you grow a party is for it to be active – both within and without. By having primary competition for public offices, this creates publicity that makes outsiders pay more attention to not only what the candidates are saying, but what the party stands for. By getting voters accustomed to voting in a “Peace and Freedom Primary” this gives them the feeling and a certain appearance of being “big league” and encourages others to join.
This is what baffles me about the AIP there in California. They have two candidates running for Governor,for example, but from what I read on the blogs here and elsewhere, it appears that certain AIP leaders don’t want one of the candidates running at all. Why? How can you grow this party if its not active? How can you expect to draw public attention to the party if the nominees are “hand-picked?”
Again, 3rd partisans are their own worst enemies. The AIP in California is proving that.

First of all, where is your absolute proof – rather than an opinion – that folks supporting Ms. Nightingale are engaged in an organized campaign to hijack the AIP? Just because new members comes into a party and become activists, doesn’t mean they are trying to take the party over for wrong purposes. Don’t you want the AIP to have more than the some 400,000 registered members that it currently has? Wouldn’t you rather have a million registered AIPers?
Okay, so Ms. Nightingale is a “johnny come lately.” Do you actually think you are going to elect someone statewide with just the registered voters you currently have – or those whom you have deemed are “legitimate” AIP members because they’ve been registered AIP for 20 years? When did you first register AIP? Unless Ms. Nightingale takes stands on the major issues which are contrary to the AIP position on those issues, then what is the beef? Man, the country is falling apart and you want to find fault with someone who seems to have a strong candidacy for Governor simply because they “they were one time a member of the GOP?” How silly.
Since I don’t reside in California, I have no “dog in this fight” but it sounds to me like you are one of those 3rd party purists who thinks every member must cross their “t’s” and dot their “i’s” just the way you think they should.
With this kind of mindset the AIP will never become the party it could become. Wake up!! Give this lady a chance to be proved or be disproved. Between Mr. Robinson and Ms. Nightingale, surely you already see who has the largest following and who would receive the most votes in November. Does not this mean something?
