Sacramento Bee Confirms That California Democratic and Republican Gubernatorial Candidates Oppose Initiative to Legalize Marijuana

The Sacramento Bee has verified that Jerry Brown, Meg Whitman, and Steve Poizner, the only major party candidates for Governor of California with substantial campaigns, oppose the initiative that will be on the November 2010 ballot to legalize and regulate marijuana. See here. If Proposition 14 were already policy in California, voters (who may comprise a majority of the electorate) who favor the measure, and who wish to vote for a gubernatorial candidate in November who favors the measure, would be unable to do so.

  1. If Proposition 14 were already policy, then Mr. Prinz von Anhalt would (likely) be on the primary ballot. Voters who favored the marijuana initiative might turn out to support him, while the anti-marijuana vote would be split among Brown, Whitman, and Poizner.

  2. Historic statewide initiative in California to legalize, control, and tax cannabis. Help build national support for the movement. Sign up on the website, join the campaign! taxcannabis.org

  3. Hopefully one of the major three has enough sense to realize that if they support legalizing marijuana they will get votes from everyone who wants to legalize the safer alternative to tobacco and alcohol.

  4. Check out the old *Reefer Madness* movie from circa 1937-1938.

How many FELON drug gangs are also opposing any legalization of MJ ???

See the many dead gangsters and corrupt govt officials during alcohol prohibition due to the MORON 18th Amdt 1919 – repealed by the 21st Amdt 1933.

One treats adults as adults — if one has any brains — but of course the party hack Donkeys and Elephants both have NO brains.

  5. This is a rare opportunity to send Congress a message that support for the prohibition is over. The only people left championing the prohibition are those benefiting from it financially – law enforcement, the DEA, Mexican drug cartels and drug treatment centers.

We the people of the United States, we the taxpayers who fund the prohibition, we who watch our sons and daughters be arrested for possessing marijuana while the prohibition completely *fails* to prevent marijuana’s widespread and prolific use, we demand that the prohibition be ended.

The benefits each of us, and our country as a whole, receive from the prohibition come nowhere near close to the costs it creates. The prohibition *didn’t* end marijuana use as promised, the prohibition *didn’t* protect our communities from drug dealers as promised, the prohibition *didn’t* prevent $BILLIONS from being diverted annually to the Mexican drug cartels. We no longer give our implicit consent to this prohibition which directly empowers the cartels and incites them to murder thousands of people every year.

We do not kill children and we do not support this policy that kills children. We, of the greatest democracy in the world, demand the right to determine the laws which govern us. We demand an end to the federal marijuana prohibition and the right to legally produce and sell marijuana to adults.

  6. I am not a pot user, and I have to confess I am a little obsessed with this issue. (I’m for legalization)
This big green issue is vastly more complex and far reaching than the casual observer could ever dream of.
The list of groups against legalization; Government, police, jailers, rehab, criminal gangs, pharmaceutical companies, paper industry, plastic industry, and on and on and on. They all stand to lose money if it is legalized.

The bottom line for the average consumer, more money in your pocket.

Money is why government, cops, criminal gangs, and big business will line up to oppose this, not because they really care if someone sparks a joint in their own home.

    The thin green line…

  7. Its disappointing to see the lack of support for this initiative, but it’s great to see the push for legalzing marijuana become reality. In honor of the most famous proponent of the cause, Mr. Peter Tosh: Legalize It!
