Governor Schwarzenegger Transfers $500,000 to Campaign for Proposition 14

According to the Sacramento Bee, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has just transferred $500,000 from his campaign account, to the campaign in favor of Proposition 14. See this story.

Also, Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, this week gave $257,328 to the campaign for Prop. 14. I have just canceled my membership in Netflix.

    Greetings!

Check Out Our Op-Ed in Sunday’s Sacramento Bee

Sarah Lyons, our National Communications Director, just got word from the editor of the Sacramento Bee. This Sunday, they plan to run an Op-Ed by our National Counsel Harry Kresky on the Open Primary Prop 14.

The Op-Ed will run next to one by California Republican Party Chair Shawn Steele, who opposes the open primary (surprise, surprise).

Since the Sac Bee has requested exclusivity, I can’t send out a copy, but it should be available online and I’ll send out a link to it when it goes live!

Help Reach Other Independents – Come to the Phonathon
    March Phon-A-Thon — This Sunday!!

How did we build this movement over 20 years to have this impact? We built it from the bottom up, brick by brick, conversation by conversation.

Come be part of that this Sunday (March 28th) in San Francisco at 3:30 pm. We’re calling independent voters to talk to them about the open primary and the independent movement. It’s easy (you read off a script) and very rewarding.

Please RSVP by clicking a link below (if you haven’t already done so)

I wanted to let you know about this four class

  2. IndependentVoice is in error to say the Shawn Steel is the Republican Party state chair. The state chair is Ron Nehring.

  3. I fear that if this sort of thing is not defeated it will become the standard for elections, and every seat will be put permanently in the hands of either a Democrat or Republican, and all the rest of us become meaningless.

  4. It looks like a lot of money is being raised by Proposition 14 supporters.

How much money has the anti-Proposition 14 side raised?

I’ve got a bad feeling that Proposition 14 is going to pass due to the forces of tyranny being better organized than the forces of liberty.

  5. Andy,

Millions have been raised for the pro-Prop 14 side. My guess is–only a couple thousand has been raised for the anti-Prop 14 side.

  7. What would be the motivation of the CEO of Netflix to throw a quarter of a million dollars down a rathole? I was on the verge of joining Netflix, but I just decided to join Blockbuster instead. Besides, you can return Blockbuster’s DVDs to their brick-and-mortar stores.

I guess Schwarzenegger doesn’t think he’s screwed up California quite enough yet, so he wants to add the “top two open primary” to his checkered legacy. In addition to Gov. Ahnuld, these were among the backers of California’s 2004 “top two” initiative: Leon Panetta, ex-Gov. Pete Wilson, and ex-L. A. mayor Richard Riordan. And yet the voters still had the good sense to defeat this monstrosity, as it lost in 51 of the state’s 58 counties.

The opponents of the so-called “open primary” (Prop. 62) raised enough money in 2004 to beat this abomination. I’m confident that they will again be able to get their message to the voters.

I am continually amazed that some independents and small party members support the “top two open primary.” I guess they don’t give a damn about being able to elect independents and small party candidates to office, since the final choice in the “top two” is almost always one Democrat and one Republican, two Democrats, OR two Republicans.

  8. Maybe Netflix customers like to choose from different genres. Perhaps Netflix had tried comedy-only or mystery-only or musical-only plans and the customers didn’t buy into them. Even when Netflix let customers change plans on 15-day notice, it didn’t help.

Netflix let independent customers (those who had declined to state a genre preference) choose their genre for each order, with the only restriction that they limit themselves to films of one genre in any single order and that the manager of that genre had to agree.

The manager of the drama genre complained that these DTS customers were interfering with the right of true drama enthusiasts to associate with one another, or that they would select DINO (Drama in Name Only) films, and kept threatening to restrict “his” genre to those who had actually registered as drama enthusiasts.

Finally the CEO decided to let the customers choose any film they wished regardless of genre or their genre preference. He fired the genre bosses, and replaced them with reviewers who could advocate that customers rent particular films. He reputedly made this decision after watching ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’.
