British Election Still a Three-Way Tie for Popular Vote — No Comments

  1. This General Election could well be the last we fight on First Part the Post.

  2. Except for Ipsos Mori the Liberal Democrats are still polling above Labour. If you put the figures into some electoral calculators they’ve been set to hit the 3 figure mark which is still not bad.

Of course, this kind of calculation doesn’t work well in FPTP, because battles aren’t fought between strong Labour-Conservative-Lib Dem candidates in every constituency. You have to remember that in most areas its only two way: Labour vs Conservative in many of the urban areas, Conservative vs Lib Dems in the South West and Labour vs Lib Dems in others.

If we do remove the FPTP system I feel we’ll be worse off, as we’ll lose our “local” form of representation, even if it means fringer movements get recognition for their high voter turnout. The thing with fringe movements is there are those that you like to have around to give a good kicking to the main parties, and those you wish were banned from standing. In any form of Proportional Representation Fascist and Nazi movements are bound to gain the most, as they already have done in other European countries such as the Netherlands and Hungary.
