San Diego City Council Legalizes Party Contributions to Candidates for City Office

On April 27, the San Diego city council amended the city’s election laws, to make it legal for political parties to donate up to $1,000 to candidates for city office. All city and county offices in California are non-partisan. In 1973 San Diego had passed a law, making it illegal for political parties to contribute money to candidates for city office. However, the Republican Party recently won a preliminary ruling suggesting that the ban violates the First Amendment. That case is Thalheimer v City of San Diego, in U.S. District Court.   1. My problem with this logic is that it is almost NEVER applied constantly. Instead, we get lots of people pretending to believe in political rights or free elections.

    Sometimes [according to judges] elections [and other political activities] are all about the 1st and 14th Amendments and other times they hardly seem to apply at all.
