On July 4, the voters of the Rambouillet district held a special election to fill a vacancy in the French Chamber of Deputies. Green Party nominee Anny Poursinoff placed first, among a field of seven. Because she didn’t get 50%, a run-off was held one week later, which Poursinoff won. She now joins the other three Green Party members in that body. France does not use Proportional Representation for elections for the Chamber of Deputies. This post was re-written on July 14. Thanks to commenter number 4 for the additional information and the link to the election returns.
Such a shame that these Green Party Members didn’t feel the need to vote against a certain bill going through the house today, sadly it seems they aren’t quite as supportive of ‘Multiculturalism’ as they claim to be.
Mikebloke,
you mean the burka bill …the burka that abuses women’s rights and forces them to cover head to toe..
You want the Green Party to support that…
please…
get serious…
The Green Party is doing superb work…
This is absolutely deserving of coverage as Les Verts aren’t one of the two major parties in France (the UMP and the PS) but any other minor party would be just as newsworthy and I doubt it would get coverage because there aren’t Americans who knee-jerks support any party called “Left Radicals” or “Movement for France” or “Hunting, Fishing, Nature, Tradition.”
“However, in this special election, only two candidates ran against each other.”
Actually, that’s wrong. There were more candidates; this was just the run-off.
