Utah Legislature Adjourns, Leaves Presidential Primary in Early February

The Utah legislature adjourned for the year on March 10. It did not pass any bill to move the 2012 presidential primary, which is scheduled for February 7. Utah is thus in defiance of the national Democratic and national Republican Party rules, which forbid any procedure to choose delegates to the national convention that is earlier than March, except for Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada. Thanks to Frontloading HQ for this news.

Utah’s defiance may encourage certain other states to defy the national party timing rules.

  1. Damn good for Utah. The strength and longevity of the conceit of NH, IA, SC, and NV politicians does not make those states any the more deserving of privilege and attention than the other states. The people there are no better than the rest of us, and we all deserve a chance at importance.

However, if their date is early enough, NH and IA will move upthe calendar. and UT which stayed put will be blamed.

  2. #4 Of course UT will be blamed. The media LOVE IA and NH. The IA and NH contests are only important because the media says so. They give the media the power to affect the outcome of the nominating process rather than just reporting on it.
