Tennessee Senate Vote on Ballot Access Bill Postponed Again

The Tennessee Senate had been scheduled to vote on SB 935 on April 7, but the vote has been postponed until April 14. The is the bill that makes miniscule improvements to the state’s procedure for ballot access for new and minor parties. The existing law is void because it was held unconstitutional last year.

  1. Just vote on the ballot access bill already! I’m glad that the pre-existing law was declared unconstitutional. It restricted the rights of third party activists.

  2. Yes, but we need to persuade the legislators to improve the bill. If they won’t improve it substantially, minor parties would be better off if the bill doesn’t pass. When Ohio didn’t pass a new procedure to replace the old unconstitutional one, the Secretary of State ended up putting the Libertarian, Green, Constitution, and Socialist Parties on the ballot with no petition at all, in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.
