The June 13 edition of the Franklin (Virginia) News-Post has this story, in which former U.S. House member Virgil Goode says he is considering whether to seek the Constitution Party’s presidential nomination. The Constitution Party has never before had a presidential nominee who had been elected to federal or state office. Its presidential nominees have been Howard Philllips (who did have a relatively important appointed federal job under President Nixon), Michael Peroutka (an attorney), and Chuck Baldwin (a pastor).
Richard. Do you not consider the CP as the party which evolved out of the old American Party/AIP structure? Was not the late former Congressman John Schmitz who was the American Party nominee in 1972 and also appeared on the California ballot (where almost 1/4 of his votes came from) under the AIP label? Also, what about John Rarick of Louisiana? He was a former congressman when they nominated him. And of course, Lester Maddox of Georgia was the former governor who ran around 1976, I beleive.
I had always thought of the CP as the successor national organization to that original party, i.e. the American Independent Party (as it was called nationally during George Wallace’s presidential run in 1968) later called the American Party and then a half dozen (it seemed) similar labels including the old U.S. Taxpayer Party label, then eventually the Constitution Party label. Most of the leaders/members of these original national parties eventually joined with the US Taxpayers party and – later the CP.
I know the California AIP was always the state affliate of whatever party was nationally organized, and this may be where I may be getting that opinion. Do you interpret it differently?
Most people don’t know who Goode is so vote totals may remain constant in 2012. The CP was the US taxpayers party and I think they were a much smaller party then today.
#1, an analogy would be the relationship between the Citizens Party of Barry Commoner, which lasted from 1979 to 1986, and the Green Party, which started running candidates in the U.S. in 1986. Many of the same activists who had been in the Citizens Party later were activists in the Green Party. But it wasn’t the same party.

The connection between the CP and AIP ended in 2008.

Interesting…This guy is marred by a ton of controversies and yet still thinks he can be a legitimate presidential candidate. Not saying that a candidate has to be perfect. But when you look at his track record, it’s eyebrow raising.
Mark. I know of a serious candidate for President in 2012 who would like to enter the AIP Presidential Primary there in California next year. Who does he need to contact, i.e., telephone number, email address, etc? Please respond with an answer. This is a serious candidate and he is serious about running in your presidential preference primary – whether he eventually becomes the AIP nominee or not. Will be waiting on your response.
Thanks.
#5 … and Bob Barr didn’t raise eyebrows? Hmmm…
Virgil Goode will be the nominee of the CP only if Howard Phillips gives his approval. It’s still a “Vest pocket” party. P.S. 1) You left out Tom Anderson, the American Party nominee in 1976.
YOU ARE RIGHT MICHAEL PHILLIPS RUNS THS PARTY AND THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE. THIS WAS STARTED IN 1992 WHEN PHILLIPS STARTED THE TAXPAYERS PARTY.PHILLIPS WAS THE NOMINEE IN 92,96 00. THEN HE CHANGED THE NAME TO THE CONSTITUTION PARTY.GOODE WOULD BE A TOKEN CANDIDATE IN 12 HOWEVERIF THE GOP NOMINATES A RINO THIS COULD BE VERY INTERESTING.THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR THOSE OF US THATHATE THE ESTABLISHMENT WOULD BE WAYNE ROOT.
@#8… I don’t believe Tom Anderson was a former member of Congress or a former governor. I think that was the point Alabama Independent was making.
#6 YOU HAVE A CANDIDATE THAT IS SEEKING THIRD PARY NOMINATION OF THE CALIFORNIA AIP THESE FOLKS ARE BRAIN DEAD. THEY ARE SPLIT VERY BAD.I WISH YOUR FRIEND THE BEST OF LUCK.
TOM ANDERSON WAS A TENNESSEE WRITER HE WAS JOHN SCHMITZ RUNNING MATE IN 1972 AND THE AMERICAN PART NOMINEE IN 1976.TOM WAS A GREAT PATRIOT.HE WAS NEVER ELECTED TO PUBLIC OFFICE.
#7 Bob Barr wasn’t the best choice for the LP ticket. However, he was a HECK of a lot better than McBama or OcCain. Both Barr’s and Goode’s records are interesting to say the least.
Was there another candidate for the LP that would have gotten the votes that Barr got? I know that Barr promised over a million votes didn’t he.
#14- I doubt it but I only voted for him because the other choices on my ballot were Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
Virgil Goode will be the nominee of the CP only if Howard Phillips gives his approval
= Howard doesn’t run the CP, period.
YOU ARE RIGHT MICHAEL PHILLIPS RUNS THS PARTY AND THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE.
= Yeah, and your mom runs Intercourse, Penn.
Tom Anderson is one of the reasons why the National AIP split up back then; his “American Party” became a pathetic and incompetent joke after 1976.
I KNEW TOM PERSONALLY ,HE WAS A WONDEFFUL PERSON IN POLITICS ONE IS GOING TO MAKE FRIENDS AND ENEMIES.
19 comments! Man, it’s way too early for that much discussion over just one man. The CP will likely field several presidential candidates and have an energizing nominating convention in Nashville.

At post # 6 you asked a question about contact info. Question, was the person a Natural Born United
States Citizen and is will to prove it to a AIP Convention. First what is the place of this persons birth and date of birth. At the time of this persons
birth were both of his parents Citizens of the United
States? Was this person born in the United States prior to January 13, 1941? Was the person parents married in the United States or an area just under United States jurisdiction? If born in the United States was either of the parents a member of a tribe?
If so, what tribe? By United States we mean any one of the 46 States and 4 Commonwealths incorporated into the
United States.
Just post the details. We can get the name later. You
post your email and we will contact you direct for additional details.
Sincerely, Mark Seidenberg, Vice Chairman, American Independent Party.
CP was the US taxpayers party and I think they were a much smaller party then today.
[Lake: smaller than after the defection of all of 2008’s California partisans? Donald J. Grundmann, Doctor / Chiropractor and 2010 Gubernatorial AIP candidate, Night mare Nightingale are / is in the process of building an independent California Constitution Party. Need 100K+, got less than double figures, like six or seven, like 5 or 6, total, state wide.]
[Lake: Jeff, it is the divisive CP, years of top down oligarchy, tons of hypocrisy —– like the old California AIP B4 2008. The new, improved AIP is not perfect, but we are thousands of citizens and we are ballot access in the most popular state in the (dis) union! And none of them are registered CP. I mean just look at the eleven year old modus operentdi of CPers like Quirk and the lack of logic of Doctors like DC Grundmann and D Div Chuck Baldwin! Total fools!]
