Americans Elect Qualifies in Alaska

The Alaska Division of Elections has verified the petition of Americans Elect to be a qualified party. The procedure Americans Elect used in Alaska is called a limited political party, which means it is ballot-qualified for president and vice-president, but no other offices. This suits Americans Elect, because the group does not desire to run candidates for any office in 2012 except president and vice-president.

  1. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is where AE does the best in the 2012 vote. Very independent streak these folks. Didn’t Perot do his best here in 1992?

  2. Interesting that they went for the million plus full party petition in California, not the 177k (iirc) independent presidential ticket petition.

  3. Perot’s best states in 1992 were Maine (30.4%), Alaska (28.4%), Utah (27.3%), Idaho (27.0%), and Kansas (27.0%). In Maine and Utah, Perot came in second.

  4. #6, Americans Elect is on in five states: Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Nevada. They are also a qualified party in Florida, but Florida has a wacky new election law that says even a qualified party is not necessarily on for President.

  5. Funny how there seems to be a pattern of it taking Americans Elect a long time to turn in their petition signatures. I heard that they finished Alaska months ago. I think that these signatures were collected in 2010.

  6. Wow! 30.4%! I can’t even fathom such an accomplishment today.

It’s too bad the Reform Party didn’t keep it’s momentum. It’s also too bad that “Amercans Elect” is not a term that seems to have lasting market potential.

I’m believe strongly that before we will ever see three or more permanent strong parties somebody’s going to have to come up with a good name first.

Republican and Democratic just resonate. Libertarian, Reform, Green, Constitution and Socialist all seem to just say disenfranchised.

Because Republics and Democracies are similar enough to each arguably be the central ideology upon which American Government is based they will have the advantage until somebody brands a party whos name truely bares this kind of structural relation to the nature of our government. When this happens, all of the infighting in that party will be worth while. I hope I live to see this day.
