Both the Libertarian Party and the Green Party have compiled a list of their 2011 nominees. Here is the Libertarian Party list. Here is the Green Party list.
One candidate is on both lists. Chris Edes is the nominee of both parties for Monroe County legislator, district 24, in upstate New York. Because the Green Party is ballot-qualified in New York and the Libertarian Party is not, Edes, who has support from both parties but who is a Libertarian, will appear only as a Green. He needed no petition to get on the Green Party primary but would have needed approximately 500 valid signatures to appear in November as a Libertarian. As the commenter below explains, he did need the support of Green Party local party officials in order to be on the ballot.
Has the CP compilied any list for their candidates? Or any other 3rd Party, for that matter?
Actually, due to the fact that the Green Party is a “new” party under New York State law, petitioning was not required this year. The current law assumes that the Greens have no registered members, therefore they can’t have a percentage of members to sign a candidate’s petition. So this year, Chris is on the ballot purely because the our County Steering Committee (I’m the Secretary) decided that we wanted to endorse him. Next year, we will be subject to any petitioning requirements of a political party.
This reminds me of Soviet Union “elections,” where everybody had to run as a Communist, but the opposition candidates who were actually anti-Communist ran as Communists because the Communist party was the only legal party. While the situation here in America today is drastically different, we can still see the same PRINCIPLE being applied here: while Chris Edes is definetly NOT a believer in Green ideology (in other words, a true Libertarian,) he is running under the Green banner to get a better chance to be elected. I wish him the best of luck.
#2, thanks. I’m correcting the post.
#1, the Socialist Workers Party newspaper, The Militant, traditionally runs a list of SWP candidates every year, a few weeks before the November elections.
Libertarian Voter, can you. explain how Chris does not adhere to the GP’s 10 Key Values? As someone who interviewed him during our endorsement process, he absolutely is a Green as well as a Libertarian. Perhaps recognition of these overlaps would go a long way towards advancing all minor parties.
