National Public Radio Looks at Question of How Many Independent Voters in U.S.

National Public Radio has this balanced article about how many independent voters there are in the U.S. The article is written by Scott Neuman. The article does not refer to voter registration data. Current data shows that 42.64% of the voters are registered Democrats, 30.79% are registered Republicans, 24.37% are registered “independent”, and 2.20% are registered in other parties.

    The graph in this article confirms that independent voters, regardless of registration, are the plurality in this country.

  5. This is similar to evidence in the Idaho Pick-A-Party primary case. The defense lawyers said that political identify and political beliefs weren’t always aligned, and that pollsters would push voters, to indicate whether they were strongly, moderately, or weak partisans; while “independents” were asked which way they leaned.

    Leaner independents were more reliable voters than weak partisans. The judge took this evidence and interpreted it to mean that independents would interfere in the Republican primary.
