One Independent Presidential Candidate Petition in Ohio is Invalid Because Petition Listed No Vice-Presidential Nominee

This year, two independent presidential candidates filed petitions in Ohio. The petition of Michael Vargo has been rejected because it didn’t list anyone for vice-president. See this story. He apparently did not know that Ohio election law permits stand-ins, so even though he hadn’t found his actual running mate when he started petitioning, he could have used a stand-in.

The other independent presidential petition, for Richard Duncan, has been approved. Duncan was also an independent presidential candidate in Ohio (but no other state) in 2008. In 2008, he received 3,905 votes. Ohio requires 5,000 valid signatures for independent candidates for statewide office.

Ohio has seven ballot-qualified parties: Democratic, Republican, Constitution, Green, Libertarian, Socialist, and Americans Elect.

  1. MCCARTHY WAS LISTED ON THE BALLOT WITHOUT A RUNNING MATE IN SEVERAL STATES IN 1976

  2. #1, I don’t think that is true. McCarthy had a different vice-presidential candidate in virtually every state. But he always had one.

  3. #3, you are right. McCarthy had no vice-president listed in Tennessee or Texas. In all the other states where he was on the ballot, he did have one (Arizona and North Dakota at the time did not print vice-presidential candidates on the ballot). These names were on ballots for v-p: Colorado Mary Ann Surges, Delaware John Stouffer, Florida Sharon Kilpatrick, Illinois John Clay, Iowa Anthony Colby, Kansas Marlene Barrett, Kentucky Rollie Bartlett, Louisiana Hugh Long, Maine Donald Lucas, Massachusetts John Stouffer, Michigan Patricia Weymouth, Minnesota Duane Stein, Missisippi Sharon Kilpatrick, Missouri Marlene Barrett, Nebraska Phyllis Paine, New Hampshire Patricia Holland, New Jersey Nancy Wood, Ohio Dennis Anderson, Oklahoma Sharon Kilpatrick, Oregon John Callahan, Pennsylvania Sally Wheaton, Utah John Stouffer, Vermont Robert Toal, Washington Carl Maxey, Wisconsin Magdalene Downey.
