The Connecticut Secretary of State has indicated that the Libertarian statewide petition has enough valid signatures. The petition puts the party’s presidential and U.S. Senate candidates on the ballot. This means that Gary Johnson will appear on all the states in which Bob Barr failed to get on the ballot, except that it is unknown if he will appear in Oklahoma. Bob Barr failed to qualify for the ballot in 2008 in the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. UPDATE: on September 11, the Connecticut Secretary of State officially confirmed that the Libertarian petition is valid.
How int he world did Barr miss Lousiania in 2008? Its only a filing fee and electors
The Louisiana Secretary of State’s office appeared to be closed on the 2008 deadline because of a very bad hurricane. So the electors were turned in too late. A US District Court interpreted an emergency directive from the Secretary of State to mean the electors were turned in in time, but the 5th circuit reversed and took Bob Barr off. The US Supreme Court was then asked to intervene, but it refused.
Actually, its only paperwork. We missed in 2008 because we waited until the last minute and at the last minute, a hurricane came through.
Great news. The LP is making a comeback from the Barr campaign’s not getting on those states.
What’s your source for this? Last I heard, there were 11 signatures to go with several sheets left to be checked.
Cool. I think the LP has a relatively successful year for its Presidential candidate this year. 750,000 sounds about right.
