On September 30, Barry Commoner died at the age of 95. See this New York Times obituary. He was one of the founders of the Citizens Party in 1980, and its presidential nominee that year. Many present-day Green Party activists first became active in electoral politics within the Citizens Party. The logo for the Citizens Party in most states was a pine tree. Thanks to Darcy Richardson for the link.
Some presidential nominees are still living from the presidential elections of 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980, including Dick Gregory from 1968, Linda Jenness from 1972, Jimmy Carter from 1976 and 1980, and John Anderson from 1980.
Ed Clark and Lyndon LaRouche are still alive, aren’t they?
Sadly LaRouche is alive and seemingly well. His followers have been harassing folks at the local Post Offices where I live for the last couple of weeks with their posters of Obama as a witch doctor and Adolf Hitler. I pointed out to one of them that if they were so concerned about Obama being a criminal then why were they followers of someone who has actually been convicted of crimes. He seemed quite confused by this statement.
Also David McReynolds is still alive
RIP Barry Commoner.
Ed Clark is (at least as of a few months ago) alive and, as far as I can tell, well.
Yep, Clark is still alive. As is Deidre Griswold (WWP), I believe.
RIP
Ed Clark was at the most recent LNC.
C’mon now! 1980 isn’t that long ago…is it?
It is if you were 50 at the time!
Dick Clark, the famous TV host, did die. The reason I bring it up is because I have always wondered if Ed and Dick were related, as they bore some physical resemblance to each other, and, as I recall, when Ed ran for President in 1980, some people confused him with Dick.
My idea of great American.
George McGovern is also still alive.
It’s funny that one of Barry’s big press in 1980, come from using the BS word in a radio spot on the two party system. Otherwise Barry as I recall didn’t have much national attention. Are those 20 minute Ed Clark ads even around any more. That was a first.
The Green Party is stronger than ever. Thanks to Doctor Jill Stein’s strong, friendly, intelligent leadership as the 2012 nominee. Doctor Stein has brought Independent, Independent Greens, and yes, conservatives back to the Green Party with her sensible Green New Deal in 2012. Barry Commoner would be proud.
Ken Kechler is still alive too, and hugging trees with Daryl Hannah at age 98: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Hechler
