Joe Mathews, California Political Journalist, Says Voting for Most Voters is About the Party, not the Candidate — No Comments

  1. I’ve surveyed people, voters along these lines for years. Nearly no one outside the small circle of people with an admitted outsized interest in electoral politics can name the legislator(s) that got their vote but yet can recall real well what party they voted against. The point: We need many more viable parties to vote FOR, candidates will follow.

  2. There is no rebuttal, no argument. Just “we’re party animals, dude” and a party game about name your assemblyman.

Joe leaves the Fox and Hounds office and heads over to the Menagerie nightclub to conduct some political research. He approaches a woman who introduces herself as Cat. After some idle chitchat, Joe asks, “Do you know the name of your assembly member?”

“I’m not going to touch that. I just met you.”

Exasperated by the snail’s pace of the interview, Joe doggedly pursues. He decides a more direct approach is in order. “No, is he like a Donkey? Or an Elephant?”

Cat frowns, “I’m not stupid, I was a political science major, and a cheerleader. We were the Huevo Rancheros.”

    “That’s not an animal”

“Duh. You’re really too serious. Let’s dance.”

Cat leads Joe onto the dance floor, but can’t make him dance. She begins to dance, but suddenly shouts, “Capricorn!”

    “What?”

“Capricorn. My assembly member is a Capricorn.”

“You’re just trying to get my goat.”

“No, I met him at a party, and he was telling me his sign. He told me that same corny joke about the assembly member. Are you sure you aren’t a politician?”

Joe, sheepishly, “No I’m a political journalist.”

“I heard he was going to resign, something about wanting to concentrate on his marriage, and there is going to be a special election. He was a real party animal. Maybe that is why they don’t get anything done in Sacramento. Too much partying!”
