Reince Priebus, Republican National Chair, Will Try to Switch Republican National Convention from Late August to June

Reince Priebus, national chairman of the Republican Party, continues telling the world that he hopes to have the next Republican national convention in June, instead of late August. See this story. To have the national convention in June requires that states with June presidential primaries move them to an earlier date. In 2012, states that had June presidential primaries were California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Utah. If the Republican Party wants all those states to change their presidential primary dates, the party will be required to persuade many Democratic state legislators to support this idea. 1. If those states don’t move their primaries couldn’t those primaries just become non-binding, and the delegates be selected by convention in those states instead? Or is that against state law?

  2. Montana tried moving the presidential primary to February, but didn’t get the votes. Republicans also tried a caucus system one year, but found out how expensive it was, and the fact that people could take over the party, so they went back to sponging off the taxpayer.

  3. GOP dominates the legislatures of South Dakota and Utah, so both of those state can flip easily to April or May.

  4. New Jersey, California, and Utah had February primaries in 2008. New Mexico Democrats had a private primary that year. The primaries in New Jersey and California were moved because the Democrats didn’t have a nomination contest, and they didn’t want to help Republicans out. It is unlikely that either of those states would want to sit on the sideline in 2016.

California should take this opportunity to move the open primary to September.

  5. That is not against state law. And if there were such a state law, it would be unconstitutional. The U.S. Supreme Court three times as ruled that states can’t tell the parties how to choose delegates to their national conventions. Those decisions were the very first court decisions establishing that political parties have a right to freedom of association.

  6. The party hacks LOVE to play their MORON games with Prez nomination stuff. See especially the Michigan MORONS.

Abolish the gerrymander USA Electoral College and Senate.

    P.R. and nonpartisan App.V.

  7. Richard Winger,

That does not work that way in California. The AIP has a lot of
    state control over it. Conventions
have to take place in Sacramento
County between dates set by the State.
