Arizona Governor Signs Bill that Repeals Ballot Access Restriction

On February 27, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed HB 2196. As a result, the restrictive ballot access law passed in 2013 is now repealed. Thanks to Rick Hasen for this news.

  1. And to think I used to consider her to be one of the craziest Governors in the whole country. Awesome!

  2. The only reason that she did this is that opponents of the bill gathered enough signatures to place it on the ballot as a referendum, and the supporters of the bill knew that it would lose in a public referendum vote, so in order to save face, the bill has been repealed.

    So I don’t think that Governor Brewer did this out of the goodness of her heart.

    Correct. Another theory is that the longer the wait before vetoing, the longer the period of ebullience among her whack job, anti-American, anti-democracy, anti-human rights Tea Party bedfellows. No need to give them reason not to pony up contributions to lunatic fringe candidates across the country until you absolutely have to.

    How about a Gadsden Sale? Do you think Mexico will take back the part of Arizona that we bought from them? We’ll throw in the rest as a bonus.
