New California Registration Data: The Only Two Parties with Fewer Members are the Democratic and Republican Parties

On April 22, the California Secretary of State released new voter registration data. The new data is as of April 4, 2014; the previous tally was for December 31, 2013. The new figures, compared to the previous tally, show that all five of California’s minor parties have more registrations than they had previously. Also the number of independent voters grew. But the Democratic Party and the Republican Party lost members.

The new figures are: Democratic 7,678,424; Republican 5,041,564; American Independent 472,536; Libertarian 114,656; Green 109,157; Peace & Freedom 77,594; Americans Elect 3,604, other parties 444,020 (this includes people who didn’t check any box); no party preference 3,718,931.

The Dec. 31, 2013 figures are: Democratic 7,695,907; Republican 5,073,380; American Independent 469,648; Libertarian 112,527; Green 108,785; Peace & Freedom 76,268; Americans Elect 3,482; other parties 421,600; no party preference 3,698,660.

There is no data for the Constitution Party or the Veterans Party, the only two unqualified parties that have re-filed to have their registrations tallied. That is because those two groups did not file the paperwork in time to be included in the new tally. But they will be included in the tally that comes out next month.

New California Registration Data: The Only Two Parties with Fewer Members are the Democratic and Republican Parties — No Comments

  1. so Obama and holder are soon both removed from office and all of their six years if acts, voting rights enforcements and federal judicial appointments are voided — including 9th Circuit USCA appointments affecting CA election law decisions as well as SCOTUS.

  2. “The more you tighten your fist, the more star systems will slip though your fingers.” Princess Leia, Star Wars IV

It seems that the Top Two system may be producing a similar effect in California, only substitute star systems with registered voters.

  3. “other parties 444,020 (this includes people who didn’t check any box); no party preference 3,718,931.”

Why do you persist in making this claim?

Under California Statute, a registrant who does not indicate a party preference, is presumed to have No Party Preference (NPP).

The growth in the Other Party registration is concentrated in Los Angeles and Alameda counties, where 7.0% and 6.2% of registrants are now other. By contrast, Contra Costa has only 0.28% Other party voters.

The registrars in Alameda and Los Angeles counties are recording registrations differently than in other counties, and the current incompetent Secretary of State is not ensuring conformity.

  4. There were wide disparities in the number of registrations on a county-by-county basis such that comparing the statewide totals is virtually meaningless.

For example, Tulare dropped 6.77% of its registrants. The number of Republicans dropped 3394, almosts 11% of the statewide drop, even though Tulare only has about 1% of the state population. And yet the percentage of Republican registrants increased in Tulare County.

Republican-leaning areas are likely to have more efficient government, including updating the voting rolls. This will tend to produce a systemic bias when calculating state totals.

  5. Alameda and Los Angeles County Elections officials take
a different view on this than the election officials in the other 56 counties. That is why the current stats
are not constant between counties in California.
