On October 7, David Luntz III, a registered member of the Constitution Party, was elected to the Deltana Community Corporation Board. The Board now has two members of the Constitution Party; the first, whose term was not up this year, is Pam Goode.
The Deltana Community Corporation Board is the local government for inhabitants of the city of Delta Junction and the surrounding area. In Alaska, boroughs and community corporations are somewhat analogous to counties in other states. Thanks to J. R. Myers for this news.
I don’t know why Alaska doesn’t call these boroughs and community corporations “counties” like 48 other states do (the 49th state – Louisiana being an exception).
Louisiana calls their counties “parishes” as this goes back to their French history.
But Alaskan history, when it was first under Russian control and the Native Americans, do not to my knowledge have any connection to the words “borough” or “community corporation” for local units of government. These definitions for county equivalents are something unique to post 1958 State of Alaska government organization and I suppose the Alaskan Independence Party would disagree with me here for this suggestion.
Still the name County – which all know was brought over from England – just sounds more American, and when one person in, for example, Nevada speaks to someone in North Carolina about their county government, each can relate to the other.
When I think of boroughs, I think of large cities such as New York City.
