On October 23, South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell resigned from the legislature and said he will not run again. However, he won the Republican primary in June, and his name will remain on the ballot, according to this story.
Also on the ballot are Democrat Mary Tinkler and Green Party nominee Sue Edward. Harrell has been in the legislature since 1992, and until today, was the Speaker of the House. His district, the 114th, is in Charleston. Thanks to IndependentPoliticalReport for this news.
Yet another argument for conducting primaries earlier than August or even September. AND – If such an event occurred in a Top Two State such as California, there would be only one candidate on the ballot. Oregonians, beware!
I meant “for not conducting earlier than August or Sept.” Sorry.
For some reason, I couldn’t get the link to open to the story, but it is rather strange for such a prominent politician to resign less than 2 weeks away from the election.
Hopefully, I will learn what the article read later.
Richard writes that his name will remain on the ballot. Is this such a strong GOP district that he might win despite having withdrawn? If such were to happen, will a special election have to be called? I would assume so, thereby meaning extra costs for the taxpayers.
He pleaded guilty to misusing campaign funds. Resigning from office and withdrawing from the race were part of his plea deal.
The Alabama Speaker of the House, also a Republican, has been charged with some 23 counts (I believe this is the correct number), but he is not resigning, and continues with his campaign.
It seems to show that no matter which of the major parties are in control, they disappoint the people. One would think the people would open their eyes, but the people just keep on voting for the major party candidates election after election.
What is it going to take to make the average citizen of the United States to wake up?
