New North Carolina Registration Tally

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has a new voter registration tally on its web page. The current percentages are: Democratic 41.60%; Republican 30.57%; Libertarian .41%; independents and miscellaneous 27.42%.

Just prior to the November 2014 election, the percentages were: Democratic 41.76%; Republican 30.37%; Libertarian .39%; independents and miscellaneous 27.49%. Thanks to Ray Ubinger for this news.

  1. I’m sure it was by “happenstance” that the Registration Card used the label “unaffiliated” for those who are Independents. For if it did, there would be sever hundred thousand Independents, more than enough to qualify as a political party.

    Hopefully, an effort will attempt to convince some of these “unaffiliated” voters to re-register as “Independent.” An Independent Party could hold the “balance of power” in a state like North Carolina.

    Let’s hope this movement starts soon.

  2. I live in NC and the NC voters card is divided into sections. The first part lists the party you are currently registered into and the second part lists various options that you can fill in when updating your info. I changed my registration to unaffiliated in 2012 and I had to write in my choice. I think unaffiliated is NC’s label for independents. Personally, I wish registration by party would die. It seems to be a sectarian head count. I just don’t see why a voter can’t call up a party and join directly. I would also reform primaries by allowing a voter to secretly pick a parties’ ballot on primary election day or just let the parties run the contests themselves.
