Some Mexican states held gubernatorial elections on Sunday, June 7. This is the first year in which independent candidates have been permitted to run for partisan office in Mexico. The voters of Nuevo Leon state gave an easy victory to Jaime Rodriguez, who will be Mexico’s first independent state governor.
This was probably allowed to happen by PRI (Partido Revolucion Institucional) so that they would appear to be democratic.
Perhaps but the PAN has done very well in recent years as well including winning the presidency back to back. 30 years ago or so that would have been unthinkable.
The Los Angeles Times today (June 9) has a large front page article on the election of Jaime Rodriguez as the first Independent elected to major office in Mexico. http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-americas/la-fg-mexico-election-results-20150608-story.html#page=1
