New York Bill to Move Presidential Primary from February to April

Current New York law says the presidential primaries will be held on February 2, 2016. On June 15, AB 8256 was introduced, to move the 2016 presidential primaries to April 26. However, the legislature adjourns for the year on Wednesday, June 17. It is somewhat likely that this bill will pass, but it is not certain. If the bill passes, it will have no impact on petition deadlines for independent candidates and the nominees of unqualified parties. Thanks to Josh Putnam for the bill number.

  1. Do the Greens qualify for a presidential primary in New York? How does a candidate qualify for the presidential primary ballot?

  2. Yes, the New York Green Party is entitled to a presidential primary in 2016. It had a New York presidential primary in 2000 with four presidential candidates listed. It was eligible for a presidential primary in 2012 but for some reason it didn’t have one.

  3. at the capitol in Albany yesterday
easy to see why these people were named / are called lobbyists

should have taken an iPhone photo of there hundreds of people flaked out on the labyrinth of Capitol stair cases.

  4. You petition on to the ballot, though the numbers are less for major party candidates and are relative to the total number of registrations, meaning it’s less for the Green Party than the major parties. For some local offices, the Greens only need one signature to run a candidate. But under state law, you can’t witness your own signature so you at least need another Party member to circulate the petition.
