TIME Magazine has an interview with Donald Trump which can be seen at this link. About 90% of the way down, he said, “I think Bernie Sanders should run on the Green Party.” The same paragraph also includes his statement that so far, the Republican Party is treating him very fairly.
Not certain why this is any of Trump’s business but oh well.
Sanders has said no to an Independent or 3rd party run. However, you never can tell what will happen.
Natural Born Citizen Party National Committee
Bernie Sanders won’t run as a Green, he knows he’s pretty much burned that bridge when he decided to run as a Democrat (sore loser laws, other crazy major party agreements, and he blamed Nader for Bush in 2000 in an interview). Besides, it wouldn’t be that easy to get the nomination given his iffy foreign policy.
What Bernie COULD do is endorse Jill Stein (she’s the most likely one to get the GP nomination by far) instead of Hillary Clinton, so more of his supporters would vote for Jill instead of being sheepdogged into the Hillary campaign and the near opposite of what he believes in. It’s still unlikely that he would endorse Jill, but it’s more likely than him running as a Green.
But it’s interesting that Trump mentioned the Green Party in a non-spoiler theorist fashion. We’ll take whatever mention we can get that isn’t “It’s your fault Bush won in 2000!” Maybe TIME might follow Elle’s lead and interview Jill Stein next (yeah, also highly unlikely, but still…)
We should not act as though sore loser laws are a factor in presidential races. Except for Gary Johnson in Michigan in 2012, no minor party presidential candidate in history had ever been kept off any state’s November ballot in the grounds that he or she had run in a presidential primary. And even Michigan in 2012 didn’t stop presidential candidates from being independents if they had run in a Michigan presidential primary.
