The Federal Election Commission has received forms from 835 individuals who claim they are running for President. The number was 586 before Public Policy Polling included Deez Nuts in some of its polls. That got so much publicity, it stimulated hundreds more entries, virtually all of them obviously jokes. See this story. Thanks to the Center for Competitive Politics for the link. The number grows every day.

James Ogle is one of the 835.
I agree with the suggestion in the article that there should be a fee to file a declaration of candidacy. A $50 fee would deter most people who want to file as “Captain Crunch” or “Obi Wan Kenobi Jedi” without deterring serious candidates.
Who is 666 on the list ???
There’s a quote from FEC Chairwoman Ann Ravel that could, IMO, be used to support ballot access reform.
“A nominal filing fee would make sense,” Ravel said, quickly adding it “must be nominal, because of the importance of encouraging all people to participate in the political process.”
