Federal Election Commission Has Received Forms from 835 People Who Claim They are Running for President

The Federal Election Commission has received forms from 835 individuals who claim they are running for President. The number was 586 before Public Policy Polling included Deez Nuts in some of its polls. That got so much publicity, it stimulated hundreds more entries, virtually all of them obviously jokes.   1. I agree with the suggestion in the article that there should be a fee to file a declaration of candidacy. A $50 fee would deter most people who want to file as “Captain Crunch” or “Obi Wan Kenobi Jedi” without deterring serious candidates.

  2. There’s a quote from FEC Chairwoman Ann Ravel that could, IMO, be used to support ballot access reform.

    “A nominal filing fee would make sense,” Ravel said, quickly adding it “must be nominal, because of the importance of encouraging all people to participate in the political process.”
