Almost everything about our electoral system favors voting against rather than for, and with Trump’s high negatives it becomes the attractive option.
Other candidates are also made unattractive by the compromises they must make to diminish the appeal of each other.

It’s happened before. Vote for the other party’s (in their mind) weakest candidate in the primary and get them nominated to be destroyed in November. In 1966, they voted for Reagan for governor. We know what happened next.
