Texas Reform Party Notifies Secretary of State that it Intends to Try to Qualify in 2016

Texas has a unique law that says if a group intends to qualify as a political party, it must notify the Secretary of State by January 2 of the election year. The Reform Party of Texas recently filed this notice.

  2. Texas requires all parties that intend to make nominations that they will either be holding a primary or conventions (only certain parties qualify to hold a primary).

    Since affiliation occurs at the time of the primary, this notice gives voters a list of parties they may wish to affiliate with.

    The January 2 date is actually too late, since an application to be nominated by convention is due at the same time that an application for a place on the primary ballot. The last time they changed the primary, they forgot to change this date.

    It was changed in legislation that failed to pass the legislature.
