Proponents of nonpartisan elections for all California state office have drafted a proposed state constitutional initiative, and have asked the California Attorney General’s office to review the language and give the proposal a title. Here is the draft. The proponent is represented by Sutton Law Firm, which specializes in election law and has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The initiative would revise the state constitution to remove party labels from ballots and sample ballots, for all the statewide executive offices and the legislature. It would retain party labels for President and Congress. Thanks to Jim Riley for the link.
Does this also end the election
of County Central Committees by
qualified political parties starting in 2020 presidential
primary?
No, it doesn’t seem to have any effect on elections for party office.
I certainly hope that my fellow Californians will refuse to sign any petition to qualify this initiative for the ballot. To call an election “nonpartisan” does not make it so. The parties and the press currently make it known the party affiliations of candidates for County Supervisor, Mayor, District Attorney and the like – it would be no different in the case of elections for Governor, State Assembly, Attorney General and the like. Since a party label at least gives voters some indication (even if maybe misleading) of a candidates inclinations such labels on the ballot should be kept. This initiative would result only in disguising candidates’ orientations. This initiative would be just another “flim flam” to deceive voters.
Voters and candidates alike need a free speech word by their name because when the voters enter the voting booth they don’t always know anything about the names for whom they may vote.
JAMES Ogle,
please list good phone number
because one you list gets no
connection.
What are the “partisan state office(s)”? I believe I understand what is ment by “non-partisan” but the only present “partisan state office(s)” I can think of are “presidential electors”.
