If someone else named Ronald Reagan (someone who is living) were to file, that would enable such write-ins to be counted. However, the deadline for write-in filing was two weeks before the primary, so no such filing can be made.

So, Richard, the law on write-ins must have substantially changed since 1968. There were thousands of November write-ins for Eugene McCarthy (alive, but no declaration of candidacy).
For general election write-ins, the presidential candidate doesn’t need to file. Instead a group of candidates for presidential elector may file for write-in status. The voter writes in the name of the presidential candidate. That is why Ron Paul received write-ins in California in November 2008. He didn’t file but a group of elector candidates pledged to him did file.
Richard Winger, did Ron Paul’s people do the same thing in 2012 as well? Or did he file in 2012? I noticed in both elections he was a Republican primary candidate AND a write-in candidate.
Yes, people filed Ron Paul for the 2012 election also, and he got 21,461 write-in votes in November 2012.
