Independent Elected to Louisiana Legislature

Joe Marino of Gretna, Louisiana, has been elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, 85th district. He is a registered independent, and becomes the third independent member of that body. The Republican incumbent who had been elected in 2015 resigned last month, and a special election was set for August 6. Marino is the only candidate who filed. When only one candidate files in Louisiana, that person is deemed elected and no election is actually held, since write-ins aren’t permitted in Louisiana. Thank to Michael for this news.

  1. One more blatant subversion of 14th Amdt, Sec. 2 — due to armies of MORON lawyers and even worse judges.

  2. Pretty odd.

The district appears to be pretty much the same since 2003, and perhaps before.

    In 2003 – uncontested.
    2007 two Republicans
    2011 two Republicans
2015 uncontested (this was the representative who resigned)
    2016S uncontested

It is on the West Bank. The news articles didn’t appear to think it was exceptional that only one candidate filed, and that a safe R seat was won by an unopposed independent.

  3. The West Bank is occupied territory.

The reason that write-in votes are not permitted in Louisiana is because of a court ruling that said write-ins would discriminate against the majority of Louisiana voters, who are illiterate.
