Libertarian Legislator in Nevada Defeated for Re-Election

One of the Libertarian Party’s four state legislators, John Moore, was running for re-election this week. He was defeated. He received 6.8% of the vote; his Democratic opponent Jason Frierson was elected with 56.1%; and his Republican opponent, Norm Ross, received 37.1%.

Moore had never been elected as a Libertarian. He had won in 2014 as the Republican nominee, but then had changed parties.

  1. Probably had to do with how he voted on the stadium funding and the way he acted about it afterward.

  2. The term “Libertarian” should be used pretty loosely with John Moore, as he claimed to be a Libertarian, and then was able to con Libertarians into donating 10’s of thousands of dollars to his campaign, after which he STABBED LIBERTARIANS IN THE BACK by voting yes on a motel tax increase to fund a football stadium, and also voting yes to increase the sales tax for more money for the police, which were his only actions as a “Libertarian” legislator (LINO, or Libertarian In Name Only would have been a more accurate description on this guy). Moore ended up being censured by both the LP of Nevada and the LNC, and I have heard that Mr. Moore is referring to himself as an ex-Libertarian now. I hope that he us out of the Libertarian Party forever. Good riddance to him.

  3. Andy – It’s very likely that Moore could have raised more money and would have had a better chance of staying in office if he had NOT switched to the LP. Conning the LP could not have been his intention.

  4. Cody… nothing to do with that at all. It has everything to do with the fact that most people are convinced that they cannot legally vote for someone who is not affiliated with the party that they themselves are affiliated with. I’ve seen repeatedly over and over again, “I can’t vote for a third-party because I’m a registered Democrat”… or “I can’t vote for a third-party because I’m a registered Republican”. The 8th Assembly District is heavily Democrat, he got elected as a Republican in 2014 as a fluke because of low Democratic turn-out.

And no this isn’t people just saying this about primaries… people are 100% convinced that they can’t vote for someone outside of their own party in the general election too.

The true problem facing third-parties is the blatant lack of understanding of how our system actually works. This stems from a lack of civics courses in schools, to a lack of educating the public on these matters by third-parties, and to a media that has no desire to enlighten the public to this simple fact.

  5. And by the way, the Democrat that got elected this election had the seat until 2014. He is the long term incumbent of that seat.

  6. Jim, Moore got elected as a Republican in that district on a fluke, as it is a heavily Democrat leaning district. I heard that the Republicans were not going to put much money in his race.

The bottom line here is that Moore betrayed the Libertarian Party.
