On February 1, the Canadian government headed by Justin Trudeau said it will not proceed with plans for a referendum on whether to use either proportional representation or ranked-choice voting. See this story. Thanks to Thomas MacMillan for the link.
Trudeau is nothing but Canadian version of Obama on promises and first PM of related to other PM.
I really wanted to see electoral reform in Canada, with a mix of Instant Runoff Voting and Proportional Voting. Mexico has the majoritarian-parallel version of MMP but I was hoping Canada would jump on board and sprinkle some electoral innovation to us Americans!
Can the provinces decide how to elect their MP’s?
Not for national elections. Canada is a federation but the national parliament writes the election laws for the whole country, for the national parliament. However the provinces can write their own procedures for provincial elections.
