Britain Holds Seven-Party Debate

On May 31, leaders of seven British parties debated each other, except that the leader of the Conservative Party, Theresa May, didn’t appear and sent a spokesperson to take her place. The election is June 8. See this story.

The seven debaters were: Jeremy Corbyn (Labour); Tim Farron (Liberal Democrat); Caroline Lucas (Green); Paul Nuttall (UKIP); Angus Robertson (Scottish National); Amber Rudd (Conservative); and Leanne Wood (Plaid Cymru). The debate lasted 90 minutes and was broadcast on BBC One.

  1. Where was Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F’tang-F’tang-OlĂ© Biscuitbarrel of the Silly Party?

  2. Pick one. Any party but your own *is* the Silly Party. Or maybe the Slightly Silly Party, or the Very Silly Party. *Yours*, of course, is always the *Sensible* Party. (And you notice the Sensibles never splinter — there’s no Somewhat Sensible Party, no Painfully Sensible Party. . . .)

  3. I don’t think avoiding the debates will serve May well. Isn’t she sinking in the polls?

  4. 90 minutes is too short if you have that many candidates. Should be a full 2 hours. Too bad PBS isn’t forced, with public funding, to override the Commission on Presidential Debates and do similar.
