The Albuquerque Journal has this article (scroll down) mentioning that the Libertarian Party will have a primary in 2018. This will be the first time that the New Mexico Libertarian Party has ever before qualified for its own primary. If the party retains that status in the November 2018 election, it will also have a primary in 2020, along with its first New Mexico presidential primary.
Don’t the Libertarian Party of New Mexico candidates have to petition their way on to primary ballots? I’m pretty sure that the presidential candidates are exempted from having to petition to get on New Mexico primary ballots, but I think that all other candidates of parties that have major party status (which the LP currently has in New Mexico), have to gather petition signatures to get on the primary ballots, and that only people registered under the same party banner as the candidate for nomination (in this case, I am focusing on registered Libertarians), or people who are registered as independents, as in they are not registered to vote under the banner of a political party, can sign the petitions. Is this correct?
