Rwanda holds a presidential election on August 4. Six candidates petitioned for a place on the ballot, but three of them were told they don’t have enough valid signatures. Each candidate needed 600 signatures, with at least twelve signatures from each of the country’s 30 districts. See this story.
Rwanda is a tough case. Paul Kagame stopped the 1994 genocide by overthrowing the previous government. So I’m inclined to give him slack. But he has set up a one party state and obviously intends to be president for life.
I would be very interested in reliable sources of news and analysis about Rwanda.
Perhaps he has read many U.S. states’ election laws! It’s like a “how to” manual of how to keep opposition OFF the ballot!
