All primaries should be held on the same day.
The Globe’s reasoning is laughable.
They claim that a spring primary would permit candidates more time to present their case to the voters, and out of the other side of the mouth claim that voters don’t pay attention to politics over the summer.
The second reason, given by all the candidates, is that it permits more time for fund raising. It also permits double dipping – hitting up contributors for a second donation for each phase of the election. If you are a candidate in a unipartisan area of the state, you can win the Democrat primary, and then gather up more donations. A donor who gave to your party opponent before the primary, can redeem themselves by writing you a check. If you are buying access to a politician, it is better to wait to see if they are elected.
Those in the political profession of course prefer long extended employment. That is their livelihood. Running a short campaign is sort of like running a firecracker stand, you do all your business in a few weeks. You better have another way to make money or you will starve.
The Globe itself may benefit from this, both from campaign ads, and more “news” to report.
UOCAVA is an excuse. Louisiana holds its runoff a month after the Open Primary. They can do this, because overseas voters can cast a provisional ballot for the second election. Because the potential candidates are known, it is easy to prepare a ballot for the second race.
Jim Riley’s comment about time for candidates to present their cases vs voters not pay much attention over the summer is exactly right!
Got another bag of Cheezy Poofs and a new jar of Vaseline. Time to get busy.
