The Word “Socialist” Has Almost Disappeared from U.S. Ballots

For federal and state office in November 2018, there is only one candidate with the word “socialist” next to his or her name. She is Maia Dendinger, Socialist Party nominee, running for Maine state senate, 5th ditrict.

The Socialist Equality Party has a candidate for congress in Michigan, but because it didn’t do the statewide petition, its candidate must have “independent” as a ballot label. It also ran two candidates in California, but because of the top-two system, they are not on the November ballot. And even in the primary, they were forced to have the label “party preference: none.”

The Freedom Socialist Party had a candidate on the Washington primary ballot for U.S. Senate, but he also was not able to be on the November ballot.

The Socialist Alternative Party has in the recent past run candidates for the Washington legislature, but it did not do so this year.

Socialist Action tried to place a candidate on the Connecticut ballot, but its petition was a few hundred signatures short.

The Socialist Workers Party has nominated twenty candidates for federal or state office, but none of them is on the ballot.

The Word “Socialist” Has Almost Disappeared from U.S. Ballots — 19 Comments

  1. Liberal-Progressive-Socialist-Communist —

all went obsolete with *Democratic* [aka leftwing control freak extremist] in 1929-1932.

One result since 1929 — the TOTAL bankruptcy of almost all govt regimes in the USA —

about $ 35 Trillion in debt with $$$ trillions more coming in unfunded liabilities.

All the factions can revive with PR – for the general public to see how lunatic extreme they are.

  2. I’m unsure of your reference to the Socialist Equality Party running candidates in Washington. Yes, they ran David Moore in California for the U.S. Senate this year (alas, also with no party label, just as an independent), but the only socialist candidate in Washington this year was the Freedom Socialist Party, who, in fact, have bitter ideological disagreements with the SEP, due to the SEP being against what they consider the witch-hunt of the #MeToo movement, and the FSP being a feminist socialist party.

There seems to have also been a Socialist Workers candidate in the California senate election as well, but they dropped out of the race before the primary.

  3. I see this as mostly being the fault of socialists themselves, as the movement is so fractured. What are there, like 10 or more socialist parties in the US? That’s not even counting the socialists in the Democratic and Green Parties, and the small group of socialists in the Libertarian Party. It’s a mess.

  4. ‘Socialist’ isn’t a monolithic ideology. There are multiple sub-divisions (Trotskyist, Marxist-Leninist, Maoist, Stalinist, anarchist, democratic socialist, social democrat, etc.) all of whom have ideological opposition of some form or another to each other. While I would like a true coalition of the Socialists in one party (such as the SPUSA, which is multi-tendency), to ignore why it isn’t the case is missing something important. The disputes between Stalinists and Trotskyists are not pretty, and to act as though ‘socialist’ is the end all, be all and therefore they don’t have real disagreements is just wrong.

  5. @me There currently 60-70 political parties that supported some versions of Socialism.

    @Jeremy Siple ???

You must be native of even brothering researched that Socialism (both word and ideology but more Democratic Socialist type) in the United States is more rising than collapsing? And for Democratic and Green Parties example you claimed that is completely wrong with Green Party since 2016 promoting their own version of Socialism with Green politics (Eco-Socialism) and because of Bernie Sanders (who is Social Democrat but pretending to call himself as Democratic Socialist) have influenced my generation (Millennials) to make Socialism as a good alternative to insanely orthodox unregulated Capitalism has been in American politics for how god damn long.

  6. But still, we doing this stupid political censorship after Cold War was ended 17 years ago. Despite now most Millennials are now loving the name???

  7. James M,
Your observation reminds of us a long held suspicion that conservative thinkers have of progressive groups: that such groups are comprised mainly of individuals who feel profound regret for their prejudices, who believe a mechanism must exist for systematically minimizing the negative results of such prejudices, who believe individuals not in their group also profoundly prejudicial views, and who believe that individuals not in their group espouse programs that deliberately cause social harm through unbridled prejudice.

  8. “You must be native of even brothering researched [sic] that Socialism (both word and ideology but more Democratic Socialist type) in the United States is more rising than collapsing?”

I never said it wasn’t. Socialism as an ideology is on the rise, but this post is very specifically about socialist political parties going extinct.

  9. @Jeremy Siple Ok, I’m just making sure you’re aren’t stereotypical native anti-Socialist but however, there a Democratic Socialist organization the Democratic Socialist of America have nearly got elected candidates since 2017 within Democratic Party and their membership is now over 50,000 memberships.

And the reason why these Socialist parties (and it’s already “extinct”) never get elected mainly because this cursed spoiler effect preventing most people to voted them.

  10. Continues to be super-easy to be a *socialist* [IE COMMUNIST] with the income and assets of OTHER folks.

    Hmmm —

what happened to that nazi *socialist* party in Germany in 1933-1945 ???

what happened to that USSR regime in 1922-1991 ??? — S2 = *socialist*.

How many New Age political history M-O-R-O-N-S in the USA (and elsewhere) with their utopian/killer control freak delusions ???

  11. I think the post is more about how ballot access is affecting third-parties, specifically socialist ones in this case, not that they’re going extinct, because they aren’t. You’re right, a lot are stronger than ever, at least in terms of the last 20 years.

Socialist Action haven’t attempted a run for a U.S. Senate seat that I know of since 2006 or so.

The Freedom Socialist Party, to my knowledge, hasn’t ever run someone for the U.S. Senate before now.

The Socialist Equality Party are running more people more often, in places from California to Michigan to West Virginia.

Party for Socialism and Liberation’s Gloria La Riva got 74,390 for president in 2016, more than any on the socialist left (I don’t count Jill Stein as an actual socialist) since at least 2000.

Socialism is indeed on the rise, or at least the word as Bernie uses it (which is considering suspect by many of the parties), and better ballot access laws would help these candidates and parties out a lot, along with, of course, other third-parties who deserve to be options as well.

  12. Heather Horst [Libertarian] for US President had filed FEC form 2 as the only female of 17 Libertarian Party candidates, the sixteen males likely being conceited ego-maniacs, psychopaths.

Us men are uniting to put our opposite gender #1 and our own gender #2, in 50/50 teamwork with our opposite gender. California State Libertarian Party Exec Mark Herd [Libertarian] is selflessly running on her ticket as Vice President and we are test marketing the catch-phrase “No BS, Horst/Herd for US President” and Herd selfishly accepts trying to be her VP.

Under the guidelines of the pure proportional representation (PPR) Electoral College, the team can support two Libertarians and the voters will decide on paper ballots, Earth Day 2020 in Monterey California.

    Let the voters decide.

The Marcia Everett [Green Party USA] for US President is also carrying a lot of credibility with the top item on Unity Platform USA being “Bill of Rights for Voting Equality” written by her, which we love.

The item “Opposite Gender #1, with consecutively ranked alternating genders thereafter”, was written by me and I am also registered Green Party USA on her Presidential ticket as #2 if she files because our team requires that candidates file FEC Form 2.

The guidelines are linked to the page listing the Electors but the guidelines for the PPR Electoral College are not formally approved by 10th USA Parliament’s majority coalition.

One female candidate for US President had formally filed and we are in communication with three female candidates for US President with Green Party USA but their filings of Form 2 are not yet confirmed.

We are seeking both candidates for US President who want to work across party lines and US Presidential Electoral College voters too, who are open to listening to all voices before the vote for President and Vice President after November 2020.

Please message me privately if you need more info., message here in chat only speaking for the whole team to hear, we want team psychology. Thanks.

  13. Ogle once again spamming. His message has zero to do with the subject.

Back to the subject, the fact so many parties are endorsing some form of socialism is scary. I prefer freedom.

  14. Both the Donkeys and Elephants are now playing the EVIL divide and conquer game with the LP and Greens respectively now — after suppressing minor parties for many decades.

What is the magic minority rule percentage for AUTOMATIC CRISIS ???

    See 1860 Lincoln math.

    See 1992 Clinton math.

    See 2016 Trump math.

see the Prez wikis for each election.

HOW MANY DEAD/TORTURED/MAIMED FOR LIFE BY THOSE EVIL *SOCIALIST* RUSSIA-USSR KILLER BASTARDS FROM HELL IN 1917-1991 ???

    — ANSWER MEANS ZERO, OF COURSE, TO 2018 NEW AGE *SOCIALIST* MORONS FROM HELL.

PUTIN AND CHINA REGIMES — TWO MORE ***SOCIALIST*** REGIMES FULL OF TOP KILLER BASTARDS FROM HELL ??? DUH.

  16. Any requirement that a party exists statewide is also blatantly un-constitutional.

Each office — election AREA — Statewide or State part.

Too many USELESS so-called lawyers in election law cases to count.
