West Virginia Election Returns Will be Known Next Week — 3 Comments

  1. Friday is the 11th, plus 12 days = January 23 at the earliest, which is a Wednesday TWO weeks from today.

FAIRMONT — Fairmont City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to delay the election of a new mayor and deputy mayor after the swearing in of two council members was postponed due to uncounted ballots.

While three council members were sworn in during the Jan. 8 meeting — Mayor Tom Mainella, council member David Kennedy and newcomer Donna Blood — the uncounted ballots have left two districts up in the air. Mainella said it’s only fair to wait for the new members to come aboard before council elects a new mayor.

“It was the consensus of council that, out of fairness to the new council members who are yet to be named because of the problem with the 57 uncounted votes, that we wait until they’re seated on council to have the election,” Mainella said. “We want to let them have input into who the next mayor and deputy mayor will be.”

While the ballots will be counted Friday morning, Mainella said that an extended recount period and contest period — amounting to 12 days in total — will likely mean that the elections won’t happen at the Jan. 22 meeting, either.

Departing council members Marianne Moran and Fran Warner will continue serving Districts 1 and 5, respectively, until the new council members are ready to be sworn into office.
