The New Jersey Elections Division has posted the registration by party as of February 28, 2019. Since the September 30, 2018 tally, every party except the Republican Party has gained in share of the registration. The share of voters registered independent declined slightly.
The new percentages are: Democratic 37.44%; Republican 21.64%; Libertarian .21%; Constitution .18%; Conservative .18%; Green .14%; Socialist .08%; Natural Law .07%; Reform .022%; independent 40.04%.
Percentages as of September 30, 2018 were: Democratic 37.39%; Republican 21.72%; Libertarian .18%; Constitution .15%; Conservative .15%; Green .12%; Socialist .07%; Natural Law .06%; Reform .018%; independent 40.14%.
The Constitution Party’s new total, 10,968, is the highest state total for that party in any state, except Nevada.
Is the Socialist label the SPUSA? I only ask because I know the SWP have been known to get on ballots in New Jersey.
Pretty much. It was the SPUSA that brought a suit against the state to allow voters to register as Socialist, though obviously not everyone who is registered as such is a member of the SP.
Wikipedia says that the Independent American Party of Nevada is the former CP state affiliate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_American_Party_of_Nevada
also uses the past tense “was”: “It was one of four Constitution state parties that had not changed its name to “Constitution Party”…”
The wiki article references a Constitution Party of Nevada, which was established in Reno, Nevada and supported by the national party: https://web.archive.org/web/20140727173924/http://nvsos.gov/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=3362
However, the IAPN website, http://www.iapn.org/ , is still linked to the CP national site. Are they actually still affiliated? If not, that WOULD make New Jersey tops in CP state voter registration.
Wikipedia’s opening line is not accurate. The Nevada Independent American Party is still part of the national Constitution Party.
The affiliation form says “Socialist Party of New Jersey”
New Jersey pushes party affiliation more than most states.
The voter registration form has a blank space, but no boxes, and says the question is optional. The party change form lists nine parties but has no write-in space. Unaffilated is below some instructions that might discourage some voters from admitting that they are not affiliated.
” I, being a registered voter at the address listed below, do hereby declare that I do not want to be affiliated with any political party or group.”
[ ] Unaffiliated**
Natural Law? I thought they were all gone except in Michigan, and even there they are independents.
@me,
New Jersey had about 35 NLP registrants for decades. Then New Jersey changed their registration process. On the registration form, the party affiliation is fill in the blank, and indicated as being optional.
But if a voter skips the field, or writes in something silly like “independent” the state sends them a form which some voters will interpret as demanding they pick a party.
A voter will think that they aren’t Democratic or Republican or even Libertarian or Green. Being from New Jersey they think that Reform is a joke party. They aren’t Conservative and have never heard of the Constitution except in that civics class in high school that they got the C- in, and that was only because they got extra credit for registering to vote.
That leaves NLP or Socialist. Flip a coin.
Since then 4399 voters have revealed that they are NLP members, a 100-fold increase. NLP is keeping pace with SPONJ. Remember that The Sopranos and Jersey Shore are documentaries about the state.
