Vermont Bill to Let Voters Sign More than a Single Petition for Any Particular Office

A Vermont omnibus election law bill, SB 107, passed the Senate on March 21.  It removes the prohibition against signing more than one petition for any particular office.  It also requires write-in candidates who want their write-ins counted to file a declaration of write-in candidacy in advance of the election.

  1. Yes. A voter only being able to sign for one candidate for each office leads to all kinds of problems. Some states it is very hard to get to people, especially if it is a district specific petition, and even more so if it is a gerrymandered district. Limiting people to signing for one candidate makes these places even more difficult. Also, lots of people do not remember for which candidate or office they signed, and they do not even know that some places have laws against signing for more than one candidate per office, and this leads to more signatures being disqualified, and there is not much the people working on a petition drive can do about this.
