Texas Bill that Both Helps and Hurts Ballot Access Passes State Senate

Late on the evening of May 20, the Texas Senate passed HB 2504, the bill that makes it easier for a party to stay on the ballot, but which requires the nominees of convention parties to pay filing fees.  The bill is now through the legislature.

  1. I’d say on average it’s far more beneficial than harmful. It’s much easier to come up with money than it is to get 80,000 ballot access petition signatures in 75 days. Of course, most of these Republicans aren’t doing this out of the kindness of their hearts, but instead out of their belief in the spoiler effect, but even so us minor parties should take such reductions in the harsh ballot access requirements and run with it while we can.
