California Senate Appropriations Committee Will Vote on American Independent Party Bill on August 30

On August 14, the California Senate Appropriations Committee expected to consider SB 696. However, the bill’s author, Senator Tom Umberg, did not attend the hearing. This is the bill to force the American Independent Party to change its name.

The Committee will take up the bill again on Friday, August 30. Thanks to Mark Seidenberg for this news.

California Senate Appropriations Committee Will Vote on American Independent Party Bill on August 30 — 4 Comments

  1. The hearing was on *August* 14.

Doesn’t the delay increase the due process issues of changing election laws in the middle of a campaign.

Perhaps Umberg is considering all my common sense alternatives.

  2. This is really a bill to end the American Independent Party of California because current election law does not allow the American Independent Party to call a convention until after the direct primary in 2020.

Conventions are the place a Political Party can change its name. The Bills current deadline to notify the SOS of a name change is Sunday December 1, 2019 which is
a date the Secretary of State Offices are closed.
